On Detachment

Detachment is not indifference. It is the prerequisite for effective involvement. Often what we think is best for others is distorted by our attachment to our opinions: we want others to be happy in the way we think they should be happy. It is only when we want nothing for ourselves that we are able to see clearly into others' needs and understand how to serve them.~ Mahatma Gandhi

I have begun to study the Yoga Sutra a few verses at a time, every few days or so.  Today's verses were:

These thought patterns are mastered (meaning regulated, coordinated, controlled, stilled, quieted) through practice and non-attachment.

The control of these modifications of the internal organ, the mind, is to be brought about through tireless endeavor and through non-attachment.

Control over the mind¨s fluctuations comes from persevering practice and non-attachment.

To a Western mind, non-attachment can mean lack of energy or engagement.  Instead, attachment means the ego.  If we are able to get our ego out of the way, we are able to experience the true world.  Form is an expression of the go and gets in the way of goodness and light.

This is my spirit snack for the day.

Peace!
